Maryland Spine Injury Lawyers
Help for clients in Baltimore, Columbia and throughout the state who ended up paralyzed because of an act of negligence
Your spinal cord is a bundle of nerves and tissues connected directly to your brain, making up one half of the central nervous system. The relationship between them is what allows you to walk, breathe and use your hands. Damage to one will almost always affect the other, and the results of that damage can be catastrophic.
At Plaxen Adler Muncy, P.A., we understand how a serious spinal cord injury can change the course of your life and that of your family forever. Our catastrophic personal injury lawyers have helped countless families in Baltimore, Columbia and throughout Maryland obtain the help they need after a devastating accident or event damaged their central nervous system.
Spinal cord injuries and paralysis
Spinal cord injuries are always serious. A person may suffer with limited mobility, chronic pain and loss of function in parts of their body. People with incomplete paralysis could lose some feeling in part of their bodies but not in others, and may even recover from their injuries with treatment and rehabilitation. The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation says of incomplete injuries “that the ability of the spinal cord to convey messages to or from the brain is not completely lost; some sensation and movement is possible below the level of injury,” as opposed to a “complete injury [which] is indicated by a total lack of sensory and motor function below the level of injury.”
The most severe cases involve paralysis, which can be temporary or permanent, partial or complete.
- Partial paralysis affects a specific limb, area of the body or group of muscles. It is possible, for example, to be paralyzed in one leg or one arm and not the other.
- Paraplegia affects the lower half of your body, usually below the waist. Paraplegics are usually confined to wheelchairs, but maintain full use of their torso and arms.
- Quadriplegia, also known as tetraplegia, affects the entire body below the neck. A quadriplegic may require a breathing or feeding tube in order to survive.
In every single case, however, a patient will need to undergo extensive and possibly life-long rehabilitation and medical treatment, even if the spinal cord injury can be healed. The victim may require expensive and injury-specific medical devices in order to live, and faces a host of other medical conditions that can crop up along the way. People confined to wheelchairs are at an increased risk if bedsores, blood clots, kidney infections, skin infections or rashes and blood pressure issues, on top of the pain and suffering and feelings of depression that so many victims experience.
What are the causes of spinal cord injuries?
The spinal cord, like the brain, is protected by bones, but it still vulnerable to injury. Some of the more common causes of serious spinal cord injuries include:
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Falls from heights
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Medical malpractice
- Untreated infections
- Certain medical conditions and diseases
- Sports-related accidents
- Acts of violence
