Anti-Nausea Drug Zofran Linked to Birth Injuries

Zofran, an anti-nausea medication, has been linked to birth defects in babies born to mothers who were prescribed the drug to help with morning sickness. Zofran, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, had not been approved for this use by the Food and Drug Administration. Despite not being approved for this use, GlaxoSmithKline marketed the drug to be prescribed to pregnant women who were experiencing morning sickness. In 2012, GlaxoSmithKline paid a three billion dollar settlement to the U.S. Department of Justice for marketing their drugs, including Zofran, for off-label uses.
If you took Zofran, the brand name for ondansetron, during the first trimester of your pregnancy and your child was born with a birth defect, you may be entitled to compensation from the manufacturer of the drug. Some of the birth defects that have been linked to Zofran include:
- Cleft palate
- Heart defects
- Cognitive conditions
- Club feet
- Vision problems
- Craniosynostosis, a condition where there is not enough room in the skull for the brain to grow and develop.
These conditions can be devastating to the child and potentially require life-long care. GlaxoSmithKline should be held accountable for the injuries caused to children by marketing a drug to pregnant women when the drug had not been approved for that use. Plaxen Adler Muncy, P.A. can help you if your child was injured because you were prescribed a dangerous drug like Zofran for your morning sickness.
