Injuries to the Chest from Vehicle Crashes
When we think of car accidents, we often picture broken bones, cuts and lacerations, or whiplash. However, one injury that is far more common is injury to the chest. Whether from airbags, seat belts or the steering wheel, occupants of a car or truck can suffer serious physical trauma during a vehicle collision.
The issue with chest injuries is that they can happen even in a low-speed accident. If an airbag does not deploy, a seat belt might not provide enough protection to prevent an occupant from hitting the steering wheel or dashboard. In a highway-speed vehicle collision, injuries to the torso can cause serious conditions like:
- Broken or bruised ribs. Injuries to the ribs are usually immediately noticeable due to the pain. A bruised rib or ribs typically feel like a dull and aching pain. Broken ribs, however, are more of a sharp pain, that cause discomfort when breathing. Suspected broken or fractured ribs should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible, as complications can include punctured organs or pneumonia.
- Contusion to the heart or sternum. A collision or crash can cause blunt force trauma directly to the chest. You may feel discomfort or pain after the accident; if this continues, you should see a medical professional to examine your chest for injuries.
- Injuries to internal organs. A severe injury to the chest can cause internal injuries, which may not symptomize until the damage is already done. After any serious accident, ensure a medical professional checks for internal injuries.
- Punctured lungs. Physical trauma to the chest can bruise or puncture the lungs, which can be a life-threatening condition. Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing. You will need immediate medical intervention.
- Soft tissue injuries. With involuntary contraction of muscles paired with the impact of a car crash, you may suffer muscle tears and strains in the chest area. You may feel sharp pains or discomfort when breathing. Always seek medical attention if you are in pain.
Many car crash victims feel a surge of adrenaline or shock that can trick them into thinking they do not have serious injuries. Then, in a few hours or days, they show signs of life-threatening injury. This is why it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately after an accident, especially if you are experiencing a bad headache, chest pain or trouble breathing.
Not only will this potentially save your life, but it will also document your injuries in the event you decide to bring a personal injury action against the negligent party that caused your accident.
